NAPPY RASH

Nappy rash is quite common, and can sometimes occur, regardless of how careful you are in changing nappies. One baby may have more sensitive skin than another and therefore may be more prone to nappy rash.

Nappy rash can be quite painful for your baby, and you may therefore find your baby more irritable, and needing more comfort when your baby does have nappy rash.

Nappy rash is red swollen skin that looks damp and may have some blisters.

WHAT CAUSES NAPPY RASH?

Nappy rash can be caused when baby’s skin is aggravated by moisture in the nappy, which is further irritated when germs attack the area when urine or stools are present in the nappy.

Subsequently, babies can get nappy rash when they have a dirty nappy on for too long, when they have diarrhoea, or when they are ill.

However, some babies may be more prone to nappy rash if they have sensitive skin.

TO TREAT NAPPY RASH

• Changing baby’s nappy frequently will help keep baby’s skin dry.
• Use a barrier cream on nappy rash area when you change baby’s nappy as this will ensure that urine stays away from the skin. Applying the barrier cream on nappy rash may also help in soothing the pain from nappy rash.

Some parents find the use of baking soda for nappy rash effective in treating nappy rash, for washing baby’s bottom add one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to 600mL of water.
