BABY DEVELOPMENT - TEETHING

On average, babies first teeth usually appear from approximately 6 months onwards, some babies first teeth may appear later, even up to 12 months of age, while others are earlier, some babies have even been known to be born with a tooth!

Signs of teething can occur as much as a few months before the first tooth becomes visible, and symptoms of teething include excessive dribbling (drooling), irritability, face rash, cough, ear pulling, finger and fist sucking, and red swollen gums. You may find your baby will be biting down on everything they can put into their mouths during this time to help relieve pressure from their gums. You may also find, if your baby normally has good sleeping habits, that your baby begins to wake more during the night and during their daytime naps as well, this should subside once their teeth show, in the meantime try to keep them as close to their normal routine as possible.

Other baby teething symptoms which many mothers advise their infants experience include diarrhoea and nappy rash, rash over body and fever. Although these symptoms are not medically linked to teething, so if your baby does experience these symptoms you should check with your healthcare professional to make sure there is no medical reason why your baby has these symptoms, do not assume that it is caused from teething.

If your baby does seem to be in discomfort during teething, you can help your baby during this time by rubbing
teething gel onto their gums to provide some relief from the pain and offering a teething ring for your baby to bite down on.
