BABY DEVELOPMENT - 0 to 3 MONTHS

Even from this early age, your newborn will show signs of intelligence. Your newborn may try to copy your facial expressions – try poking your tongue out at your baby and see if he/she does the same back to you, be careful not to do it too often though otherwise your newborn may be poking their tongue out at every eager visitor that comes their way!

Your newborn will be able to focus on your face and listen intently to what you have to say, even if it is only for a brief time before they become tired. This may be rewarded when your newborn begins to smile at you, usually from the age of approximately 6 weeks.

Crying is your baby’s way of communicating, your newborn is trying to tell you something, maybe your baby is tired, hungry, cold/hot, has a dirty nappy, has wind, is in pain, needs comforting, or just needs to vent at the end of the day. See dunstan baby language. It is important in these early days to respond to your baby’s cries so that your newborn can feel safe and secure. They will soon learn to use their voice and make cooing sounds to you, this may happen anywhere from 8 weeks or later.

Your baby will also enjoy being sung to, or listening to some gentle music at this early age. Tummy time is highly encouraged for your baby at this time and assists in strengthening their head control, although some newborns will kick up a fuss when you start tummy time, they will soon get used to it and start to enjoy it. Start your baby with tummy time at short periods until your baby becomes used to it. Your baby may be able to hold their head up at approximately 2 months.

At around 3 months or later, your baby will be able to laugh aloud.

The first 3 months of your baby’s life may be referred to as the ‘fourth trimester’ this is the transitional period where your newborn is learning about the environment outside the womb. It is also the time where you, as a new parent, are determining your baby’s needs and wants.
