BABY DEVELOPMENT - 9 to 12 MONTHS

Now that your baby has had their fair share of knocks and bumps from being so mobile, your baby will now show signs of fear. This may be evident when your baby starts to cry when you switch on the vacuum, or blender or they hear some other loud noise which frightens them.

Your baby will now look for a dropped item instead of thinking it isn't there if it is out of sight. If you leave the room, your baby now understands that you will come back again, and that even though they can't see you, you are still there.

Your baby will enjoy playing peek-a-boo games at this age, and will enjoy seeing themselves in the mirror and in photos. Your baby will also enjoy listening to music and nursery rhymes, and may 'dance' away by bouncing up and down to them.

Your baby may become shy around strangers and people they don't see very often, but they will have special relationships with their family.

By approximately 9 months, your baby may be able to pull up to standing position if holding onto something. You may even see your baby take their first steps during this time, the average age is 12 months for a baby to take their first steps, although some may be able to take their first steps earlier, other babies may not take their first steps until well after their 1st birthday. Development in babies varies for each infant.

By approximately 12 months, your baby may be able to talk to you, saying one or two clear words. Your baby will love hearing you talk, and hearing you repeat words that baby says. Your baby may also be able to shake their head for 'no' at about 10 months.
