Safe sleeping environments are imperative for your baby. Today’s society has been educated with extensive awareness on how to establish a safe sleeping environment for your baby. SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) has therefore been on the decrease due to such awareness and education on safe sleeping for babies.
SIDS sleeping recommendations include placing baby on their back for their sleeping position, ensuring baby’s feet are at the end of the cot and that baby is tucked in tightly so that they cannot move down under the sheets (if any sheets are used). While your baby is young, he/she may prefer to be swaddled during their sleep time, this provides your baby with a warm and safe sleeping environment, but again, remember to place your baby’s feet at the end of the cot or bassinet.
To reduce any risk of SIDS, sleeping environments for your baby must be safe. Ensure that there are no blankets, pillows or cot bumpers in your baby’s cot or bassinet, and ensure that your baby’s face and head is not covered. Check that your baby’s cot or bassinet mattress fits securely into the frame, place your baby on their back to sleep, and also place your baby down the end of their cot or bassinet for their sleep. These factors, together with avoiding smoking around your infant, will help to achieve a safe baby sleeping environment.
As your baby gets older, more mobile, and stronger, you may find that you place them down in one position of the cot, only to find that they have wriggled around to another position. The best way to avoid your baby losing their sheets, or getting caught up in any sheets during the night is to dress your baby in a safe baby sleeping bag. Ensure that any babies sleeping bags has ventilation holes and is of a low fire danger hazard. Your baby will get a good night sleep staying warm in winter, and you will get a good night sleep knowing that your baby is safe, even if your baby has moved around in their cot during the night.
